How to Spot Rental Scams & Avoid Fake Listings

Rental scams are not rare. They are not random. And in a market like Las Vegas — high demand, fast turnover, thousands of renters relocating from out of state — they are increasingly common.

At Rentmor, we built a free rental directory because we believe finding a legitimate place to live should not require a law degree or a fraud investigator. But the listings are only part of the equation. Knowing how to protect yourself is the other half.

How Rental Scams Work: Scammers do not guess. They operate on a simple formula: take a real property, steal its photos, relist it at a below-market price, and create enough urgency that a renter sends a deposit before asking questions.

By the time the renter shows up to tour the unit, the "landlord" is unreachable. The money is gone. The listing never existed.

It is a fast operation, it costs almost nothing to run, and it works — because renters in competitive markets are conditioned to move quickly or lose the unit.

5 Signs a Rental Listing Is Fake

1. The Price Does Not Match the Market

A legitimate landlord prices to market. A scammer tries to attract. If a unit in Summerlin or Henderson is listed significantly below what comparable rentals are asking, that gap is not generosity — it is bait.

Before responding to any listing, spend five minutes comparing prices in that neighborhood. Rentmor, Zillow, and Realtor.com all give you enough data to know immediately when a price does not make sense.

2. The Photos Are Stolen

This is the most reliable tell. Open Google Images or Google Lens and reverse image search every photo in the listing. Scammers routinely pull images from real estate websites, active listings, and short-term rental platforms and repurpose them under a different address.

If those images appear elsewhere — different city, different address, different platform — the listing is fraudulent. Stop there.

3. No One Will Let You Inside

A legitimate landlord will always allow a showing without charging you for it. In person or, at a minimum, a live video walkthrough with someone physically present in the unit.

If the response is that the current tenant is still there, the owner is traveling, or access is only possible after a deposit is paid, that is not a scheduling conflict. That is the scam.

Golden Rule: Do not pay for access to a property you have not seen. No exception.

4. Payment Is Requested Outside of Verified Channels

Professional property managers and landlords use traceable, documented payment methods. If a listing asks for Zelle, Cash App, Venmo, Western Union, or cryptocurrency before a lease is signed, the conversation is over.

These platforms are chosen specifically because transfers are difficult or impossible to reverse. That choice is intentional.

5. There Is Pressure to Decide Today

Urgency is the primary tool of every rental scam. The unit is getting "multiple applications." The landlord is "only available today." The price drops if you commit now.

Legitimate landlords give renters time to read a lease, verify ownership, and ask questions. Any process that eliminates that space is designed to eliminate your ability to catch the fraud.

If You Have Already Been Targeted. Act immediately:

  • Report to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov

  • Contact your bank within 24 to 48 hours — some wire transfers can still be reversed in that window

  • File a Clark County police report for documentation and to create a record that protects the next renter

Most rental directories charge landlords to list and leave verification to chance. Rentmor is free — free to search, free to list — because removing financial friction is the first step toward removing the conditions scammers exploit.

Every listing on Rentmor goes through a verification process before it appears in search results. That does not mean renters should skip due diligence. It means they are starting from a cleaner foundation. Browse verified Las Vegas rentals at no cost — search Rentmor.com today.
